Lynx site scheme

I know many of us who have visual processing and sensory issues use the Lynx sitescheme, and I want to make sure it gets improved so it's as usable as the other schemes. But that it's done in a way that doesn't make it any less accessible, of course!

DW's Lynx is already slightly improved - it displays if you're logged on versus logged out - previously both conditions had "log in/log out" links but now it shows only the appropriate one and also your journal name when you're logged in.

[personal profile] jadelennox pointed out in another post that Lynx is missing most of the menu options that are present in other site schemes and I got to thinking about how we could include them without compromising things.

My suggestion is to use a list that's UNDER what's currently the last line of the page. If it's not at the end then we loose accessibility for screen reader users and people like me who need very large font sizes. If it's at the end then it's easy to skip. So my suggestion is that it might be implemented to look like this:

I think this would work fine at the end of the page, and provides the same links as the main menu in other site schemes.

Opinions? Suggestions? How else could Lynx be improved?

Just wondering if it would make sense to reorder them for screenreaders, so that the Read category comes after Create - it seems likely to me that you're more likely to want to go to your reading page/inbox/recent comments etc than organise things.

I don't use a screenreader though, so this may not make sense.

Suggestion: instead of making it a single depth UL with a comma separated list afterwards, make it a double depth UL, i.e.

  • create
    • Post Entry
    • Edit Entries
    • etc.

ETA: the rationale being, (a)marking up for function, which is generally desirable and (b) if someone has chosen the lynx scheme because they are applying their own css layer to it, it increases their ability to manipulate the site scheme and make it comfortable for themselves.

It sounds like maybe using the same HTML as Tropo, just with way less CSS?

Right. This corresponds also to what [personal profile] zvi said above. A little bit of CSS would still be handy, but almost the exact same HTML would work.

/me turns off CSS real fast to confirm this is true

my personal home page

I set up my personal home page at rbigelo.sdf1.org and a style sheet with the intent that it should be Lynx-friendly and easily accessible with monospaced fonts and pre-formatted text.
Suggestions are of course, welcome. Perhaps this might be the beginning of an accessibility style for DW.
