reminder: what do you want?

A periodic reminder: tell us what accessibility needs aren't being served by dreamwidth and we'll see if we can make them happen. Be pie-in-the-sky. It's unlikely that dreamwidth will be able to be your bionic ears or will be able to give your service animal opposable thumbs, but if it's within the realm of feasibility, let's see what we can make happen.

Or if you are shy you can just talk about it here, or even just private message me.

Explicit Comment Heirarchy Indicators

[personal profile] jesse_the_k 2010-07-15 05:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm still hoping to have a style where the heirarchy of comments is shown explicitly through printing characters as well as/instead of through indents.

Initially discussed here at this thread, then extensively discussed over at dw_suggestions on this thread.

I lack the CSS skills to make it happen, but thought this might be an answer: If the ECHIs are shown in a fixed-width font, they could serve as both indents (if the font = background) and indicators (if the font = visible).

This isn't on the "accessibility" bugs list. The current DW interface prevents audio and large-print users from knowing which thread a comment is in. Initially I raised it as a universal design issue; I do think it's an access issue as well. Any advice on my best next step?

It's been a while since I've been through Suggestions to move things into Bugzilla -- you can tell by the fact that suggestion's 'untagged' that it hasn't been issued a decision on yet. It's definitely slated to be moved over, though. At that point it'll just be a question of when somebody can pick it up to do.

Coming back to edit this comment: It's still on the list to get moved over to Bugzilla, absolutely. I'm just debating with myself which proposal is best, and I might move it over here for further discussion.

I'm glad it's still in the "in basket." I suspect this is going to come down to a compromise between what-the-UI-should-be and what-the-tech-can-do, but I hope I'm wrong.

I've only seems something that's a little like this in outliners in the mid 90s, so having a working mockup would be really helpful. I look forward to more discussion! Happy to test anything or contribute how I can.

Right now i'm leaning towards making it a visual option that can be turned on in any style! But I'm still dithering a bit, and I need to sit down and, you know, work out how it would work. *g*
