I know on OS X, at least, there's an option for "Mouse Keys" where you can move the cursor and click using the numeric keypad. (I used it quite a bit when my touchpad started failing on one of my old MacBooks-- it maps onto some of the letter keys on a laptop, but you have to switch it on and off to type.) I seem to recall that there's a similar option on Windows as well.
